Press play on independence

Sign our petition to Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, so blind and partially sighted people get the emotional and practical support they need, when they need it.

"I was taught how to use a cane and how to stay safe when walking around. Without that support I would have been unable to work, socialise or do any activities outside of the home. The thought of others being denied this essential service is heartbreaking."

Everyone with sight loss has a legal right to support, but too many are falling through the cracks as services are reduced and delayed. Our latest research found that a fifth of local authorities in England have left people waiting over a year without support from vision rehabilitation services.

We call on the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to:

1. Commission the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to develop guidelines and quality standards for vision rehabilitation.

2. Subject vision rehabilitation services to the same regulation and monitoring as other adult social care services.

3. Recognise the skill and expertise of Vision Rehabilitation Specialists by making Vision Rehabilitation Specialists a regulated profession.

4. Encourage better integration of services, with a guaranteed route into vision rehabilitation for everyone who needs it, while ensuring blind and partially sighted people are informed of their rights and the services they can expect to receive.
